COLLEGE STATION, Oct. 27, 2021 – Earlier this month, the Math Learning Center (MLC) launched its online counterpart, the Virtual Math Learning Center (VMLC), an initiative designed to exclusively serve the Aggie community. The VMLC is the result of a multi-year collaborative process that was initially supported by a Tier One Program (TOP) grant funded by the Offices of the TAMU Provost and the Dean of Faculties.
“The VMLC was envisioned to be a Texas A&M version of a Khan Academy with a YouTube flavor but fully aligned with the content, desired learning outcomes, and the expected level of excellence of our high enrollment math and statistics courses,” MLC Executive Director Dr. Paulo Lima-Filho said.
The VLMC provides content to help students in math and statistics courses and is currently geared to course-specific information for five courses (Math 142, 151, 152, 172, 172) along with material covering special topics with keyword search capabilities. Content is available in multiple formats, including video libraries, handouts, and study guides. The current version of the VMLC is the first phase.
“We have several other features under development that will be implemented in the next few months, including the creation of a “How to…” series of videos with a highly functional design, the production of mini-courses to serve as refreshers or to fill background gaps, and the implementation of self-assessment tools,” Lima-Filho said.
The VMLC is accessible to students online 24/7 at It already houses more than 300 videos and accompanying handouts produced by faculty members in the Department of Mathematics and tutors from the MLC.
“We believe that the VMLC will be an invaluable resource for our students and that it will have a long-lasting impact in their learning process and academic careers,” Lima-Filho said.
