Academic advising in XYZ Department is a collaboration between a student and an academic advisor. Through teaching and learning experiences, the student sets goals, acquires information and services, and makes decisions consistent with interests, goals, abilities and degree requirements.
Academic advising supports the mission of XYZ Department to prepare undergraduate students for careers in X, Y, and Z and to become responsible citizens of a global society.
Measures and Findings
First-year students in X, Y, and Z degree programs will be able to identify the courses required for their degree program (Student Learning Outcomes for Academic Advising c. ii.)
Students on academic probation will identify their academic challenges and locate two campus resources to help them address these challenges (Student Learning Outcomes for Academic Advising b. ii and a. iii.). Student follow through and academic progress will be recorded.
Measure: Advisors will review course registration of 50% of freshmen at the summer New Student Conferences. Advisors will designate half of each NSC group for review at the end of each month with New Student Conferences. Advisors will use a rubric developed by the department. If 75% of the courses students register for are in the degree program, students will show achievement. Scoring rubric is included in affiliated documents.
Achievement Target: 75% of the freshman registering at New Student Conferences will have schedules that meet requirements for their degree program
Findings: Partially Met – 70% of student registrations met degree requirement
Measure: Students on probation will be required to complete a questionnaire (see affiliated documents) and then meet with an advisor. The questionnaire will be designed to help students identify academic weaknesses and will require students to be aware of grades from previous semesters. Students will also be responsible for identifying and listing two campus resources along with how to access the resources. Student will review their response to questions and identified resources with advisors who will provide feedback, additional referrals. Over the course of the semester, students will show evidence of participation resources. At end of semester, grades will be reviewed to determine academic progress
Achievement Target: 90% of students on probation will complete questionnaire and meet with advisor; 75% of those students will show evidence of use of resources and 60% of those students will show academic progress
Findings: Met – 100% of students on probation completed questionnaire and met with advisor; 80% of those student showed evidence of use and 75% of those students showed academic progress
The advisors in XYZ department met twice to review the student schedules. It was clear that after NSC registration, some students changed their schedules, putting them out of the compliance range. This might be due to advice with friends and family that differs from info received at NSC, change in a course due to reported AP or placement scores, or conflict with a course added or changed. It could also be that students simply do not understand their degree plans. Regardless of the reason, taking courses outside of the degree plan will slow down student progress to degree.
To limit these changes, NSC presentations will include more information on the importance of the degree plan, resources available to assist students in choosing courses, and the impact of changing registration after NSC.
XYZ Department had 100% compliance with the project, most likely because we placed registration holds on students who were at or near academic probation. Students were required to complete the questionnaire and identify resources and meet with an advisor prior to being able to register for their next semester courses.
For the most part, students identified reasonable and effective resources and followed up on timely manner.Of the 75% of the students who showed academic progress, not all moved off probation (17 students did not) but even those students were more successful than they had been in the past.
Advisors noted that the majority of students used the Academic Success Center, including all the students who moved off probation.Further review of the resources will continue.
